Doomsday scenario: Imagine half of the American population has been infected with Ebola and its only a matter of time before it reaches your locale. Federal troops are going door-to-door forcing vaccines and arresting anyone who does not comply. Meanwhile Russian MiGs are dropping bombs and firing missiles over Chicago, New York and Los Angeles.
No matter what the trigger SHTF scenario is, you’ve been preparing for years to take refuge in your bunker and stay there until the smoke clears, but there’s a real possibility that could take years, maybe decades. Humans simply are not built to live below the surface for extended periods of time. That is why your bunker needs to be equipped to ensure you and the family’s long-term survival and well-being.
Air Filtration
Those of you who have an extra $4,000 lying around after already splurging to build the bunker can get a DC-powered American Safe Cell filtration system (as Ultimate Bunker points out) and call it a day. Budget-oriented folks simply need to keep the concept of “air-in, air-out” in mind to build a simple filtration system that keeps you safe from NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) contamination, while also providing fresh air.
A cheap air filtration system can be built with a PVC pipe long enough to reach the surface, a couple 12-volt fan motors, and NBC-rated air filters. A man named Whalen, who calls himself “Super Daddy” on YouTube, demonstrated a great idea for the blower system. He used hair dryer motors to power the fans at each end. The fan blades should be angled at about 45 degrees so they can move air in both directions. There are several places to get NBC filters, particularly from foreign countries with surplus gas masks they never used during war times.
The idea is to be able to push dirty air out and bring fresh air in for a few hours every day. Make certain to obscure the “chimney” that comes out of the ground. That’s a surefire way to blow your cover and attract unwanted visitors.
What’s Up Doc?
No matter how many cans of tuna, green beans and pineapple you have, it’s ultimately going to run out. The only way to have a reliable, renewable food source is by farming small animals.
Rabbits are preferred for renewable food, because the meat is tasty and they can live off grass and dandelions. It’s best to simply keep at least one male and one female rabbit in your home that can be packed up at a moment’s notice when it’s time to hit the bunker.
There’s a lot of truth to the idiom “they breed like rabbits.” One female rabbit can have upward of 14 babies at a time. That gives you fresh meat anytime you want it. The ideal scenario is to raise them in cages and not let them roam free. Remember, they are food, not pets.
Makeshift Entertainment
Everybody in the bunker knows what’s going on above the surface and will eventually worry themselves to death if they cannot find ways to to keep busy. Board games, particularly chess, Monopoly, and Life, can be a nightly family activity. Avoid games like Trivial Pursuit, as you’ll ultimately end up repeating questions after playing several times.
Adult Coloring books are another great option and also help to relieve stress. You can watch a video here on these wonderful inventions. Below are several links to the coloring books in the video.

Equip your bunker with items that can be used for multiple purposes. You should already have spare tires in your bug-out vehicle to ensure you can get to the bunker when the time comes. These are also one of the best utility items to have in a bunker. Line the inside with plastic garbage bags, fill it with water, and you’ve just created a kiddie pool and/or bathtub. Stack a couple of them up to create a game table. Ideas will only be limited by your imagination.
R.E.M. sang about the end of the world as we know it in their 1987 hit… and felt fine. So will you if your bunker has the basics to sustain some semblance of normalcy.
